Why cut arrows

Manufacturers offer budget-friendly carbon arrows that are ideally suited to new archers. If you miss the target or hit something hard, carefully inspect your arrow for damage. Then, flex it while listening for cracking noises. If your arrow makes noise or breaks, throw it out or turn it into an arrow pen.

Aluminum arrows are as straight and consistent as carbon arrows, but cost less. Their biggest downside? Aluminum can bend from a hard impact or mishandling. Wooden arrows have been used for thousands of years. Unfortunately, wooden arrows have some drawbacks.

Wood can warp and is less consistent than other arrow materials. But for some archers, the traditional feel and look of wooden arrows outweighs the negatives. Have fun with your gear. Choose fletching that will get the job done and make you smile doing it. Plastic fletchings are called vanes. Vanes are usually preferred for compound bows and modern recurve bows with an elevated arrow rest.

Feathers are a great choice when you need maximum forgiveness and arrow stability. When an arrow launches from a recurve or longbow, its fletching contacts the bow.

Also, if the shafts are long and weak in spine you can always add some weight to the nock end of the arrow to stiffen the spine. But it is easier to cut them to the proper length. Smokey , Jul 26, Fyi, the easton axis is an excellent shaft. Add the 75gr or 50 gr brass inserts and you have an awesome short draw, low poundage shaft. Jofes , Jul 27, Let a Archery shop cut them or you'll have to buy a arrow cutting machine. If you don't have them perfectly perpendicular to the shaft it can reek havoc with your arrow flight.

PackerFanShootingMathews , Jul 29, Your basic idea is right on, but the physics involved are a little off. Rather, it will change the position of both nodes in relation to each other. A shorter arrow will shift both nodes closer to its center of balance by exactly the same amount. Also, those nodes don't really exist until energy is transferred to the shaft.

So if you're shooting out of alignment vertically or horizontally, you're applying force in a way that will shift those nodes into unpredictable positions. Essentially, the node on a perfectly released arrow will be just in front of the rest, while releasing that same arrow from a misaligned draw could result in that node being almost anywhere on the shaft.

If your release is bad enough, you could theoretically move that node forward of the point of the arrow and cause the shaft to only flex at one point. Bad thing is I understood what ya'll were talking about lol. Jdicenhour , Jul 29, You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content. If not, use a separate tabletop vise to immobilize the arrow and give the cutting disc sufficient purchase on the shaft. In either case, be careful not to overtighten the clamps—carbon fiber can crack or splinter when subjected to too much external pressure.

If you want to leave yourself a little margin for error, scoot the shaft down a shade so that the cutting disc makes contact just past the measurement line toward the tip end. Doing so will give you the freedom to make further modifications as you see fit. Fire up your DIY arrow saw and pull down on the handle to guide the whirring disc down through the arrow shaft slowly.

In a few short seconds, the cutting disc will slice right through the carbon fiber shaft without causing any costly damage. The abrasive sandpaper will help wear down sharp edges and neutralize any textural inconsistencies in the surface.

Such minuscule imperfections might seem like a big deal, but they could keep your inserts and tips from fitting properly later on. Oops, something went wrong. Please try again. Why Cut Your Arrows? As you can see, the length of your arrows is more than just a technical consideration.
