Remember, everyone else is in the same position as you, and is keen to make friends as soon as they can. There are lots of activities and events laid on for you during Freshers' Week. Take advantage of as many of them as you can. This is your opportunity to find social groups and clubs that not only appeal to your interests, but which may also enhance your understanding and enjoyment of your course.
Although the first friends you make at university are not necessarily the ones that will endure for your entire course, the ones you meet at the various societies you join will share your interests and are more likely to stick. Parties are obviously a huge part of Freshers Week. Again, these are a good opportunity to socialise and get to know a lot of people in a short space of time. However, if you are relatively unused to alcohol, be very careful.
You may have a few lectures during Freshers' Week. If you have never had to manage your own money, budgeting and buying your own food and toiletries can come as something of a shock. Unpack and make your surroundings comfortable, as this will help you to deal with homesickness. If you can make your space your own, you will feel less lost.
It can feel utterly overwhelming to be away from home for the first time, especially if you are in a new town, or even a new country. Make sure you have plenty of photographs of loved ones and make arrangements to email or Skype regularly. I would recommend attending as many taster sessions as possible. The student unions also run free or low-cost events , such as free film screenings, movie marathons or, in the case of my university - the University of Warwick - Mario Kart tournaments which was something my mixed hockey club initiated as a charity event, and it ended up being so popular that the Student Union adopted it into their Freshers' Week.
I got to watch Moana for free in a giant lecture theatre with some people from my accommodation who are still my friends today, so these are a good way to meet people or get to know people whilst not having to spend lots of money or drink copious amounts of alcohol.
So, as you can see, there is no one way to experience Freshers' Week. You can experience Freshers' Week as you would like to do so. No matter your lifestyle or socialising preferences. No matter if you prefer to party or to socialise whilst sober.
Or if you prefer sports or societies. There will always be something for you. There are themed events such as a white t-shirt party and a beach party, pub quizzes and bingo! Along with nights out, this university offers a lot of interesting sober socials and activities including a book give-away, a welcome barbecue and a circus skills workshop.
This university in Carlisle offers barbecues, group walks and speed friending think speed dating, but without the dating. A chance to try new food and meals halfway through Freshers' Week. Dates change depending on colleges and departments. Regardless of the dates, there are plenty events that involve food, drink, entertainment and freebies.
There are over 1, activities scheduled, including free film screenings, food markets and themed nights out e. Along with sober socials, the University of Nottingham offers many concerts, raves and parties including a UV party. The University of Leeds offers both sober socials, including a barbecue, and drinking socials, including a UV party. As well as having the usual university nights out, Cardiff university offers a lot of opportunities for sober socialising, including park walk, afternoon tea and a Great British Quiz Night.
The University of Surrey offers a huge range of activities that includes something for everyone. From afternoon tea and free coffee, pancakes and games, to self-defence workshops, to live performances for Black History Month. Lancaster University offers tours around the historical Lancaster Castle as calmer social alternatives to the nights out that they also host. For example, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge have different Welcome Week dates for their colleges and departments.
Posts on social media. It is a week full of events and activities designed to help new students make friends, familiarise themselves with their new surroundings and have a lot of fun. Be sure to introduce yourself to your lecturers and your new classmates. Check if your travel insurance policy covers your belongings.
