We spent 9 nights in Kyoto and only 4 in Tokyo but I loved Kyoto, would happily spend another week or two there but im meh on Tokyo.

I on the other hand could spend weeks in Tokyo and give Kyoto 5 minutes. It all depends on your interests. The highlight of Kyoto for me was the railway station and an excellent little Okonomiyaki restaurant that I have never been able to find again. My longest stay in Tokyo was for 3 weeks, and we never had a dull moment. OTOH I've never been in Kyoto for more than 3 days in a row, mostly because my husband will be bored out of his mind with temples, gardens and quaint cobblestone streets after a day or two personally I love Kyoto as well as Tokyo though.

Other people I know have felt the reverse, have gotten tired of Tokyo's concrete jungle after just a few days and disappointed that there are not more of said temples and cobblestone streets. There isn't an optimal number of days that will work for all tourists.
